Memsie Stakes 2017
The Memsie Stakes is a 1400m event for horses 3 years old and up and is the first Group 1 event of the Australian racing season. The Memsie received Group 1 status in 2013 – with the previous upgrade to Group 2 having taken place back in 1979.
Racing Victoria this year gave a significant cash injection to the Memsie Stakes, increasing this year’s total prize money to a staggering $1,000,0000.00.
Last year it was Darren Weir-trained Black Heart Bart’s turn to trot away with 1st prize, and the 6 year old bay gelding will be back in 2017 to defend his title. Other favourites for the 2017 title include Hey Doc, I Am A Star and Redkirk Warrior.
It’s Not A Man’s World
The mares have whipped up a terrific record at the Memsie Stakes. Since the year 2000, no less than seven mares have won the race – with Sunline and Makybe Diva having obtained all-time race stardom for their stunning performances. The Makybe Diva Stakes takes place annually at Flemington Racecourse.
2017 Race Favourites
Hey Doc
Hey Doc is a Tony McEvoy-trained three year old bey gelding, raced by jockey Luke Currie. Hey Doc is the winner of the 2016 Australian Guineas, and a firm favourite for this year’s Memsie Stakes. He had a bout of poor luck with bad barriers having thwarted his last two chances at The Goodwood and Doncaster, respectively, is in great shape and looking to make a serious comeback at Memsie this year.
I Am A Star
The 3 year old bay filly, trained by Shane Nichols, truly is a star. The mare has had a superb racing term thus far, winning no less than four times at Group level – including the highly coveted Myer Classic.
RedKirk Warrior
RedKirk Warrior runs in the signature silk colours of blue and white – white sleeves with blue stars. Trained by D & B Hayes and T Dabernig, the 6 year old chestnut gelding is a beauty and will be hoping to Weekend Hustler as winners of the Newmarket / Memsie Double.
Lankan Rupee Hoping To Return To Memsie
Trainer Mick Price has announced that Lankan Rupee would most probably be contending in this year’s Memsie Stakes – the 1400m being the ideal next step for Rupee, who is currently looking for a longer trip.
Lankan Rupee has made only 4 appearances during the last 2 years, but is a career favourite for Price and has proven to be quite an enigma. Rupee has been plagued by injuries over the last couple of years, but remains a worthy and notable contender for the title win in this year’s Memsie Stakes.
