Who Shot Thebarman Scratched from Melbourne Cup
Fancied gelding Who Shot Thebarman, who was set to carry lowest weight in Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup, was scratched on Sunday afternoon after trainer Chris Waller discovered he had an elevated temperature. He’s run in three previous Melbourne Cups, finishing third in 2014, and was looking like a prospect this year after winning the Moonee Valley Gold Cup on 28 October.
The withdrawal after final acceptances reduced the field for Flemington’s most famous two-miler to 23, and dashed punters’ hopes that the 9-year-old could have become the oldest horse to win the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival showcase.
Favourites Have to Overcome Bad Barrier Draws
In the final week of betting for the $6.2-million Group 1 handicap for three-year-olds and older, there’s been a reshuffle among the race favourites. Five-year-old British entire Marmelo has edged ahead of former favourite Almandin and is offered at $8.50, with the eight-year-old German gelding at $9.00.
Darren Weir-trained Humidor, the five-year-old New Zealand gelding who placed second in the Gr. 1 Cox Plate at Moonee Valley on 28 October, remains third in the betting, at $9.50. Unfortunately, all three were unlucky in Saturday night’s barrier draw: Marmelo will be jumping off from Barrier 16, with Almandin in Barrier 14 and Humidor in Barrier 13.
Amelie’s Star, Hartnell, Single Gaze: Long Shots
However, a bad barrier draw may not make as much of a difference over the Cup’s 3200m as it would in a sprint, and with champion international jockey Frankie Dettori in the stirrups, it may not make any difference at all to Almandin, despite his carrying second-highest weight of 56.5kg.
Top weight of 57.5kg has gone to seven-year-old British stayer Hartnell, jumping off from Barrier 12. Some punters reckon the gelding is well set to improve on his third place in last year’s Cup, despite long odds of $26.00. Amelie’s Star, drawn in Barrier 10 and offered at $17.00, is carrying second-lowest weight of 51kg.
Cismontane, starting from Barrier 17 and carrying the lowest weight of 50kg, is another long shot, who only made the Melbourne Cup cut-off on Saturday. He might be worth a punt at $51.00. Single Gaze, in Barrier 11 and carrying 53kg, is also an outsider with possibilities, at $41.00.
