Excitement Mounts As Battle Of Ipswich Draws Near
Spirits revving well into the red as drivers and fans prepare for the next event in the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship – the Coates Hire Ipswich SuperSprint, set to take place on 28 -30 July at the Queensland Raceway. Home to teams Triple Eight, Shell V-Power Racing and Tekno Autosports, Ipswich has been part of the Supercars Championship since it opened doors back in 1999.
The teams from Queensland are no doubt looking forward to taking full advantage of the privilege of racing at home, with team Shell V-Power already having proved during the 1st race at the Watpac Townsville 400 that they were the stuff that champion’s were made of.
Scott McLaughlin dominated the 1st Watpac race and is the fastest driver overall during the 2017 Championship – as attested to by his total of eight pole positions. There’s no telling what McLaughlin and team Shell V-Power are capable of once let loose on home track.
McLaughlin currently enjoys a 6 point advantage over next in line Jamie Whincup. Whincup reigned victorious during the 2nd race at Watpac, cutting McLaughlin’s previous lead of 18 points down to a more manageable size.
Breaking The Curse
Whincup seemed well and truly relieved at having won his first race since last year in Sydney. Referring to a string of victories prior to Sydney, Whincup was quoted as saying that it was easier to accept a loss when you weren’t all that used to winning, but that it was exceptionally painful to accept no longer being the quickest around the track when that was what you were accustomed to.
Jamie Whincup has been hailed the greatest supercar driver of all time by his team bosses and many others too – and it’s not hard to see why when taking into account his 204 times podium record (from a total of 419 races).
Whincup credited the win to a combination of a stellar car and team dedication. He said that a great deal of work and dedication had been going on behind the scenes – with team members and support staff enjoying no social life at all and simply grinding it up for the ultimate reward of winning, something that money could not buy.
Previous series leader Fabian Couthard did not have quite as much to rave about after his dismal performance at the Watpac Townsville 400. The DJR Team Penske driver finished in 11th position during the 1st race on Saturday, and finished off in 21st position after being all over the track surface on Sunday.
