Toy Show Quality Handicap Betting Uncertainty

There was a feast of racing at Royal Randwick’s Mighty and Power Community Race Day this weekend, and punters all over Australia joined the Sydney crowds online, to bet on some thrilling Spring Carnival action. The $150,000 Group 3 Toy Show Quality Handicap, for fillies and mares three years old and older over 1300m, was an interesting feature on the card.

Betting enthusiasts were only able to bet with confidence when the final field was announced the day before. Initially, the Toy Show Quality favourite and third-favourite, along with outsider Zanbagh, were nominated for other races on Saturday as well, and their trainers took their time  indicating which ones will be confirmed.

Invincible Gem, for example, was the favourite to win the Toy Show Quality, at $2.70. But the Kris Lees-trained 4-year-old is the $10.00 second favourite, behind Winx, to win Saturday’s 1400m G2 Warwick Stakes at Randwick too. Given that most pundits, and even rival trainers, were counting on Winx to continue her stunning form in the Warwick Stakes for Chris Waller, this decision wasn’t surpising.

Daysee Doom Double-Booked

Ron Quinton’s Daysee Doom, a 5-year-old that won Scone’s G3 Dark Jewel Classic in May, is the third-favourite for the Toy Show Quality, at $5.00. However, she has also been accepted for the 1200m G3 Show County Quality Handicap on Saturday, in which she is the second-favourite at $5.00, so the day before, no one knew which race she’d run in.

The second-favourite for the Toy Show Quality was Daysee Doom’s stablemate, Dixie Blossoms, at $4.40. In this case, Quinton had already made up his mind, and the 5-year-old isn’t entered for any other races, so she did attract a fair amount of betting. She has taken two wins and three places at Randwick to date.

Euro Angel and Imposing Lass On the Cards

Other bets punters may have wanted to consider were 5-year-old Euro Angel, at $6.00, and another 5-year-old, Imposing Lass, at $7.00. Zanbagh, a 7-year-old, is a rank outsider in the Warwick Stakes, at $101.00.

Sweet Redemption, Hetty Heights and the other five horses nominated in the Toy Show Quality field were all at $15.00 or higher and punters were having a hard time deciding on their favourites. It is rare that the field is left open so late, but it certainly made for an interesting event.
