Verstappen Stuck Ahead Of Italian Grand Prix
Team Red Bull’s Max Verstappen is reaching the end of his patience with the side. The team’s owner Dietrich Mateschitz has assured fans and stakeholders that they will not be losing Verstappen because of his frustrations with constant technical issues on his car.
The straw that broke the camel’s back was last week at the Belgium Grand Prix when Verstappen was retired halfway through the race. This was Verstappen’s 6th retirements in 12 races. Last year Verstappen ended the season on 204 points, this year he has barely cobbled together 67.
Mateshitz reiterated that a 50% race success rate for a top tier team is completely unacceptable. Red Bull are quite concerned but they will not risk losing Verstappen. They have an amazing duo with Verstappen and Ricciardo who have both shown what they can do with their vehicles when things are working.
Clinging To Their Talent
Dr Helmut Marko the Red Bull racing consultant has stated that the team will not let Verstappen go, even for a 100 million Euros, which prompted Verstappen to quip that maybe he needs to retire from racing and join the Paris Sainz Germain football club.
Max’s father Jos Verstappen, a big contributor to the team, has said that he can se his son’s frustration growing. Naturally it makes sense that this is having an immense impact on the spirit of the 19 yo Verstappen and even if the issues are miraculously fixed, he will still be entering each race with a nagging in the back of his mind that the next race could end in retirement.
Nowhere To Go
The catch 22 is that if Verstappen was to leave Red Bull, there won’t really be anywhere more competitive for him to go. Currently Ferrari and Mercedes are the two top dogs and their driver rosters are already full.
Mateschitz summed it up by asking Sky News, where would Verstappen go. They cannot keep him if they do not have a proper car for him, but Red Bull are still the best team to be with.
There have been fingers pointed at Red Bull’s engine supplier Renault who has been lax in providing engine updates and the vehicle has had brake and gear issues. Mateschitz went on to say that nothing has, or will change for the team.
They said that Red Bull cannot get a Mercedes or Ferrari engine and a Honda engine would not be enough t help them, so they are caught between a proverbial rock and a hard place.
