US Open Quarter-Finals Beckon

Monday saw Australian tennis fans on tenterhooks, as the final games of the US Open’s Round of 16 dawned. At the time of writing, some top men’s and women’s seeds had yet to book their places in the final eight.

Rafael Nadal needed to beat Ukraine’s Alexandr Dolgopolov, who dispatched Wimbledon finalist Thomas Berdych in Round 2, to make the quarter-finals. The Spaniard has been the men’s singles top seed all along, but he’s finally top of the betting as well, at $1.50 and above, with his perennial Swiss rival, Roger Federer, now at around $2.00.

Federer slumped to No. 2 in the betting after making heavy weather of his first two matches, both of which stretched to five sets. He beat Spaniard Feliciano Lopez in straight sets in Round 3, but some wonder if the 36-year-old has the stamina to win three Grand Slams in a year. Fans can decide when he plays German Philipp Kohlschreiber on Monday evening New York time.

Thiem, Goffin Still in QF Hunt

The other two matches to decide the men’s quarter-finalists still to be played at the time of writing were Austrian sixth seed Dominic Thiem versus Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro, and Belgian ninth seed David Goffin against 19-year-old Russian Andrey Rublev.

Four men are already through to the quarter-finals. American Sam Querrey will play South Africa’s Kevin Anderson on Tuesday. Querrey is odds-on at $0.75, with Anderson at $1.25. The tournament 12th seed, Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta, is also a heavy $0.50 favourite to win his quarter-final against Argentina’s Diego Schwartzmann, at $1.80.

Williams, Kvitova, Sevastova Make Women’s QFs

The three seeded players assured of a quarter-final in the women’s singles tournament already are Venus Williams, the US ninth seed, Czech 13th seed Petra Kvitova and Latvia’s Anastasija Sevastova, seeded 16th.

Williams plays Kvitova on Tuesday, with the Czech the $0.80 favourite and her 37-year-old opponent at $1.20. Sevastova is the $1.55 underdog, according to online sports betting sites, to win her quarter-final on Tuesday against American Sloane Stephens, who is at $0.60.

Monday had four other matches scheduled to decide the rest of the women’s quarter-finalists. Czech top seed Karolina Pliskova was preparing to face American Jennifer Brady, Russia’s Daria Kasatkina was to meet Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi, the USA’s Coco Vandeweghe was set to play Czech Lucie Safarova, and fourth-seeded Ukrainian Elina Svitolina was gearing up for her clash against American 15th seed Madison Keys.
