Australia Out Of Davis Cup
Australia is out of this year’s Davis Cup after Nick Kyrgios lost to Germany’s world no. 5 Alexander Zverev. Zverev beat Kyrgios 6-2, 7-6, 6-2 in a match that saw the Aussie battle everything from injury to aggression to a code violation.
Previously Kyrgios had held a steady and dominant 5-1 dominant record against the German but Sunday was a lost cause from the very start. The second set saw Kyrgios receiving medical treatment for an injury to his elbow. This could probably not have happened at a worst time because that point, Kyrgios had been 4-3 in the lead. Winning the set might have been just what the doctor had ordered for the Aussie’s mental well-being. But it obviously was not meant to be.
Kyrgios Relives A Disappointing Day
Kyrgios was understandably disappointed, saying that he would easily have surrendered his Brisbane title if it meant that he could win the tie against Zverev. He said that he had experienced a very good summer and that he had had one eye on the Davis Cup all the time.
Kyrgios’ frustration reached an all-time high during the second set tiebreak when he received a penalty point for racket abuse. Kyrgios said that the injured elbow only added to his frustration even more as his serve was his biggest strength, something which he was completely unable to do at that point.
Australia would had to have won both reverse singles rubbers on Sunday to claim the tie after the doubles matches had not gone much better than the Kyrgios-Zverev partnership.
Germany Full Of Newfound Confidence
German team captain Michael Kohlmann said after the match that to win against a strong team like Australia was a huge confidence boost for Germany and that it made the team look forward the competition in years to come.
Zverev served beautiful shots all throughout, and when the German wasn’t serving, he was making effective returns, at times approaching and winning the battle from the back of the court.
For Kyrgios it had been a case of over-confidence having headed into the match after beating Jan-Lennard Struff during Friday’s opening single matches. For Zverev however, Friday’s opening match had been an uphill battle that lasted all of four hours before he was able to make the dent.
Kyrgios reported having started to feel that his elbow would be a problem after Friday’s match, but had hoped that it would improve by Saturday, which was obviously ultimately not the case.
