Tejay Van Garderen has pushed his way to the lead in the Tour of California after a victory of 34.7km time trial in the fourth of the race, completed in San Jose.
The 29-year-old finished just seven seconds ahead of opponent Patrick Bevin, a rider from New Zealand. Third was Tao Geoghegan, from Great Britain, who came in 32 seconds after Van Garderen.
This is the first Tour of California that Van Garderen has competed in since 2013, which he won. His lead has put him ahead of previous leader Egan Bernal, a Colombian who had been in front since the second stage.
Van Garderen, who is ecstatic with his win, had this to say, “Today was a special motivation. I had memories of here from five years ago. I didn’t expect to go quite this well, but I kind of had in the back of my mind in Gibraltar that if I can keep it within a minute I can maybe take it today.”
“Today was going to be my big power play – I’m glad I was able to produce one,” he added. “Right now I’, just soaking in the moment. I think tomorrow and Sacramento should be sprint days, so we really just need to worry about that mountain stage into Tahoe.”
The fifth stage is set to be a race between Stockton and Elk Grove, with a total distance of 176.5km that needs to be covered by the riders.
