An injury to Williams’ pectoral muscle during her third round against Julia Goerges has forced her to give up on any further matches in the event. She withdrew not long before she was set to face Maria Sharapova in a fourth round.
The news comes after the 36-year old Williams made a strong comeback in the French Open, who had previously not been a part of professional tennis while on maternity leave. Williams told reporters that she’s having some issues with her pectoral muscle, and that the injury has left her unable to serve. She went on to say that she has a planned MRI, as well as doctor and specialist visits, in order to find out the extent of the injury.

The injury is a blow to Williams’ comeback, especially considering the amount of effort she put in to her games on the courts after her long absence. She entered the French Open with a rank of 451, but managed to win three of her four matches so far in the season. Her next match against Sharapova was one of the Open’s most anticipated events, and Williams’ concluded that she was disappointed that she was unable to face her long-time opponent.
Sharapova has been in the same boat during the Open, having made a comeback after being absent from two previous French Opens after she was issued a doping ban. Her next match will be against Garbine Muguruza.
