Stage Winner Gaviria Says He’s Representing Colombia

July 13, 2018 by

Fernando Gaviria from Colombia has claimed victory in the fourth stage of the Tour de France after a brunch sprint took him to the front of the pack. The win is the second success for the Colombian rider after his victory at the event’s opening race.

The 23-year-old, who is currently riding for Quick Step, could be seen waiting for the perfect time to execute the sprint that catapulted him to the front, beating out German Andre Greipel and Peter Sagan. Not far behind was Chris Froome, who, despite all the latest controversy, has made it clear that he wishes to win this year’s Tour de France for the fifth time in a row.

Gaviria is currently the biggest competition for Froome, especially after Gaviria’s stunning win at the beginning of the international event. Gaviria told reporters that everyone in his home country of Colombia is watching his performance in the event, and that he feels like he’s representing everyone from his nation. He added that nobody else was helping him during his event, and that his team had to work increasingly hard to keep up.

The finish was incredibly close for all the front leaders, so much so that riders had to sit and watch the replay before a winner was declared. Greg van Avermaet, who received the yellow jersey at the beginning of the event was able to hold on to it for now, and told reporters that he was glad at the outcome of the fourth stage.
