American Serena Williams saw victory over contender Anastasija Sevastova 6-3, 6-6 and is now able to move into the finals of this year’s US Open, being played in Flushing Meadows, New York. Williams, who is now just one win away from her 24th Grand Slam victory, has made serious ground since her return to the professional scene after a long absence due to her pregnancy.
After besting Sevastova, Williams walked out of the Arthur Ashe Stadium with a wave and a twirl, and then waited as officials announced that she was going to compete against in the final. The answer came in the form of Naomi Osaka, who bested her long-time opponent, Madison Keys 6-2, 6-4. Osaka, who was asked if she had a message for Williams, simply said, “Serena, I love you.”
Williams missed out on seven months and seven tournaments during her pregnancy and subsequent complications following the birth of her first child, Williams has picked up the slack as she beat out the 19th seeded Latvian in 66 minutes for 31st Grand Slam final. If Williams earns a win in the final, it will be her seventh US Open title, which will break the tie she has with Christ Evert for the most Open titles.
This will be the second Grand Slam final chance for Williams this season, who came close a record of 24 majors in Wimbledon, but ultimately lost the final match of the event to Angelique Kerber.
