Jim Courier Steps Down as Captain

October 1, 2018 by

Jim Courier, captain of the US Davis Cup team, has announced that he will be stepping down from his position once the 2018 competition has come to an end. The US Tennis Association announced the news that the captain would be ending his role just two weeks after the American team lost to their Croatian hosts 3-2 during the Davis Cup semi-finals. Despite the announcement, there was no information released as to why Courier would be stepping down.

In an email to reporters, Courier explained that the decision to walk away from his role as captain was his and that he stated that at the end of last year he had already made the choice that 2018 would be his final year as captain.

He further add that he announced his choice to leave to his fellow players and USTA resident Katrina Adams during the team’s closing dinner, after the rest of the team’s matches had been concluded for the event.

The next captain to be appointed by the USTA will be the first to take part in the new Davis Cup format that was recently approved by the International Tennis Federation in July. The new format will begin next year, and will include an 18-team tournament at a neutral site that will serve as a season ender.

The US has had a mixed bag of luck with the Davis Cup, having won a record 32 titles, but none since as far back as 2007.
