January 16, 2019 by

Johanna Konta has advanced in the Australian Open after beating home player Ajla Tomljanovic with a huge three-set in Melbourne.

The 27-year-old is the current British number one, and won a final-set tie break to edge through the evenly balanced match. She will be joining Dan Evans and Kaite Boulter for the second round after her 7-6 (7-4) 2-6 7-6 (10-7) victory.

Konta is now set to take on two-time Grand Slam winner Garbine Muguruza after the Spanish player beat Saisal Zheng 6-2, 6-4. Konta, who reached her highest career point when she moved to a rank of four in 2017, is now currently the leader for the British, following Andy Murray and Kyle Edmund, both of whom have exited the tournament.

Now ranked 28th in the world, the player showed brief moments of her form that saw her reach the semi-finals in Melbourne during the 2016 tournaments, in a match that lasted a total of two hours and 51 minutes.

Talking to reporters, Konta stated that she found every aspect of the match to be tough, and that she had recently lost to a tough opponent in Brisbane during the first rounds of the Grand Slam, which are always difficult, coupled with the high heat and humidity. Konta added that she competed hard, and that she was happy she could complete on every point that she earned, lastly saying that she was happy to have been given the chance to play tennis on her own terms.
