Caster Semenya Missing World Championships

August 2, 2019 by

Caster Semenya has confirmed that she will not be returning to defend her World Championship 800m title later this year in September after failing to fight the restriction testosterone levels for female athletes. The South African has stated that will be continuing to fight for human rights despite her disappointment in the decision.

Semenya has appealed twice to the IAAF ruling that prevents her from participating without any medication, but the ruling that had initially allowed her to take place has since been overturned. Semenya is currently challenging new rulings from the sport’s world governing body, the International Association of Athletics Federation, that her and other athletes with differences in sexual development need to take medication in order to compete.

Semenya has previously been able to race while they were waiting for decision of a Swiss court after she lost an appeal in the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The latest ruling from the Swiss Federal Supreme Court means that she will no longer be allowed to race at the World Championships this year, which will be taking place in Doha.

The court has yet to reach a final decision on the appeal. 28 year old Semenya has stated that she is disappointed for not being able to defend her title, but that it will not deter her from fighting for the human rights of all female athletes that are in the same position. The IAAF stated that the decision creates needed parity and clarity for all athletes concerned.
