Dina Asher-Smith Claims Second For 200m

August 21, 2019 by

Dina Asher-Smith stressed why she was seen at the Birmingham Grand Prix as a World Championship medal contestant with an impressive display in the 200 m. The British double European champion was second behind Bahamian Shaunae Miller-Uibo, who decided to compete in the Doha 400 m.

Talking about her performance, Asher-Smith said that it was a bronze, due to it being like an Olympic or world final, and that it had been fantastic to have been given the chance to compete against the class at home. She had led with 22.24 seconds with 40m of the race remaining before Miller Uibo, who is the world number one for 200m at the moment, took over the lead. The 25 year old clocked in at 232.36 seconds, while Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, who is the champion of the London 2012 event, took third place with a time of 22.50 seconds.

The field, which included double 200 m world champion Dafne Schippers, double Olympic sprint silver medallist Marie-Josee Ta Lou and Nigeria’s Blessing Okagbare-this season’s second fastest girl-all fought in sunny, humid conditions.  Briton Asher-Smith has set her sights on the double sprint at the World Championships starting on September 28 and confirmed that she will compete in the 100 m at the British Trials next week in Birmingham.

In the 100 m of the males, Yohan Blake from Jamaica edged Briton Adam Gemili by 8,000ths of a second as both girls passed the border in 10.07 seconds.
