Mo Farah, four time Olympic champion, intends to defend his 10000m title during the upcoming 2020 Tokyo Olympics. 36-year-old Farah, had previously quit his track events in 2017 in order to focus on the marathon. After having won gold for both the 5000m and 10000m at the 2012 and 2016 events, the athlete has decided to turn his attention to the Olympic races where he found most of his success.
Talking about his new plan, Farah stated through social media that he would be back on the track and would be giving the 10000m another go. He added that hopefully he hasn’t lost his speed since he last competed, but that he intends to train hard either way and see what he can do. Farah, who has earned the title of world champion six times, and has not yet taken part in a marathon at a major championship, had hinted earlier in 2019 that he would be able to make the switch as he missed the “frequency” that track racing gave him.
The runner had finished in eighth place during the Chicago Marathon earlier in October, and had won the event in 2018 as his third race of his career. Although the athlete will still need to qualify for the Tokyo Games, remained confident, stating that it had been exciting competing in the marathon over the last few years, and will continue despite questions raised about his relationship with coach Alberto Salazar.
