Top Serbian tennis seed Novak Djokovic is being accused of having faked an injury in an attempt to gain an advantage over rival Pablo Carreno Busta during the French Open men’s singles quarter-final at Roland Garros.
Djokovic’s 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4 win over the Spaniard sealed his 10th entry into the French Open semi-finals. The successful entry was however completely overshadowed by allegations of a forced medical timeout during an early stage of the game – a stage completely dominated by Busta. This was also the same opponent faced by Djokovic in the match that ultimately got him disqualified from the U.S. Open after he hit a line judge in the throat in a fit of frustration and anger.
Though donning a bandage on his neck for most of the week and appearing to have received some treatment from a local trainer for an alleged injury to the arm, Djokovic failed to convince his opponent of the authenticity of his injuries. Faking injuries, said Busta, was an old habit of the Serbian, and definitely not his first. For this reason, Busta said he wasn’t at all surprised by Djokovic’s insistence on a medical time-out. The Serbian has been making a habit out of “faking it” when in the throes of losing, said the despondent-looking Spaniard. Whenever a match gets complicated, Djokovic can be seen asking for assistance for medical reasons, explained Busta, after which he nearly always returns to playing “as normal”.
Djokovic shortly after responded to Busta’s claims of his being prone to cave under pressure by snapping back about the problem being of a physical nature, and not a mental one.
