AU Cycling Faces a Critical Turning Point

October 25, 2019 by

Australia’s cycling industry is in a state of unmatched upheaval as voting begins to possibly unify the 19 separate entities currently responsible for the sport countrywide. The proposed reorganisation aims to facilitate better outcomes for both recreational and professional cyclists, creating a unified voice in terms of advocacy and improving financial resources for the sport.

Sports Australia, a federal agency in the country, commissioned a review on governance from Ernst & Young in 2018. This was done with the support of three of national sporting organisations, BMX Australia, Cycling Australia, and Mountain Bike Australia. 128-page report the consultancy came back with described the situation as fragmented in terms of delivery, strategy, and structure. It went on to say that the fact that the sport is divided into three disciplines, with only two of these having constituent territory and state operations in place, left independent entities with fewer assets, limited capacity, and inadequate revenue opportunities.

This is the reason for the three NSOs’ proposition of total unification, a merging of the three separate cycling disciplines and the 19 individual constituent bodies to form AusCycling. The benefits of this model would include improved advocacy and commercial outcomes, more resources becoming available thanks to increased efficiencies, and a single racing license. Sport Australia has also promised AU$2.5 million if the merger goes through.

Several states have expressed disquiet over the plan however, and this opposition may well derail the reforms. But there are indications that the process may proceed even without unanimous approval from state and territory bodies.
