Marc Cavendish Will Race in the Tour de France
Mark Cavendish is set to take part in the Tour de France after gambling on his fitness. Cavendish was only able to start training as recently as 6 weeks ago, after suffering from the Epstein-Barr virus.
Mark Cavendish was diagnosed with Epstein-Barr virus 2 months ago, and his team were worried that he would not be able to recover in time. What effect the disruption to his preparations for this year’s race will have remains to be seen.
Cavendish Hopes to Get Closer to Merckx’s Record
Mark Cavendish has managed to take 1st place in 30 of the stages of the Tour de France, and is hopeful about closing in on Eddy Merckx’s record of 34 this summer.
Cavendish is set to continue his attempt to become the most prolific winner of stages in the history of the Tour de France this July, after he has been named in the squad for Team Dimension Data in the race.
A Gamble for Cavendish after Ill Health
Although the news does not come as a total surprise, it is a gamble, thanks to the fact that this sprinter, at 32-years of age, was only able to take up his training regimen a short 6 weeks ago, after contracting the Epstein-Barr virus earlier on in 2017.
This virus is best known as the source of glandular fever, and went on to, in effect, wipe out the 1st half of Cavendish’s season, although he did manage to claim 2nd place in the Tour of Slovenia’s final stage this month. He now stands on 30 Tour de France wins, only 4 behind the current record holder, Eddy Merckx.
Cavendish tweeted that he had been asked about it for the first time in what felt like a very long time, and that he was ecstatic about having been selected for the team.
The Line-Up for the South African-based Team
Steve Cummings and Scott Thwaites, from England, will also be included in the Team Dimension Data line-up, with the latter making his debut at this year’s Tour de France.
Cummings is another cyclist who had to miss much of this season, thanks to a serious crash he suffered in April 2017. He broke his scapula, sternum, and collarbone, but has made a rather remarkable return at the National Road Championships which took place last week. Cummings claimed a road race double and rare time trial.
