Aussie Rohan Dennis Finds A Stepping Stone

Australian pro-cyclist Rohan Dennis will be easing back into competitive cycling in this year’s Tour de Pologne, after crashing out of the Giro d’Italia earlier this year.  Dennis, riding for BMC Racing Team, has had a mixed fortune run this year – with the disappointment of the crash being cushioned slightly by two victories in the Tour de Suisse.

The Tour de Pologne does not include any time trial stages – Dennis’ strongest suit.  However, Dennis responded by saying that the Tour de Pologne was not the be all and end all for him, but that he was in fact a matter of merely keeping the legs going and readying himself for a much bigger challenge:  the Vuelta a Espana.

Dennis went on to say that he was gunning for at least two stage wins in the Vuelta a Espana – not a far cry considering that the Aussie had finished the Grand Tour in 2014 and had managed to secure third place in the final time trial in Santiago de Compostela.

Dennis is bound to be banking on a good result in Vuelta’s individual time trial.  BMC Racing Team will be a unified force as far as support in the time trials is concerned – being a team focused largely on time trialling, and one of the best in the business at that.

Getting His Own Back

Meanwhile, Astana confirmed on Tuesday that Fabio Aru will indeed be signing up for the 2017 Vuelta a Espana.  Aru, winner of the 2015 Vuelta, will no doubt be looking to get his own back by facing off with Tour de France winner Chris Froome.  Aru finished in 5th place overall.

Initially geared towards the 100th Giro d’Italia, Aru was momentarily tripped up by injury – forcing him to press onwards towards the Tour de France.  After his sterling performance during a very wet and slippery Tour, Aru is more than ready for the challenges of Vuelta.

Vuelta To Be Deciding Factor For Samuel Sanchez

It appears that this year’s Vuelta a Espana will be directing the career path of yet another cycling great – this time a career that is on the brink of drawing to a close.  40 year old Samuel Sanchez has indicated that his experience at Vuelta will determine whether to race for another year, or to call it a day and retire.

The 2017 Vuelta a Espana will commence on August 19.
