Rohan Dennis successfully defended his world time trial title after winning golf at the Road World Championships that took place in Yorkshire. The 29-year-old Australian was able to complete the 54km race from Northallerton to Harrogate in a time of one hour, five minutes, and 5 seconds. It was 1 minute and 9 seconds faster than his next contender, 19-year-old European champion Remco Evenepoel from Belgium, while Italian Filippo Ganna took the bronze medal.
Alex Dowsett came in fifth place, which was his best result in a world time trial, earning his country Great Britain a second place for the Olympics. John Archibald came in 14th after being called up following the withdrawal of Geraint Thomas from the 2019 Tour de France.
Dennis had been racing for the first time since he abandoned the Tour just before the start of the individual time trial stage that took place in July. He had been the last rider to begin, and closed the gab on 2019 bronze medallist Victor Campenaerts along with Vuelta a Espana winner Primoz Roglic before he was able to improve on the time that had been initially set by Evenepoel. The Belgium rider had won the junior road race and time trial titles during last year’s World Championships. The rider, who skipped the under 23 category in order to compete at elite levels this year, is expected to challenge for the upcoming road race.
