Arsenal Back: On 3 for 3 at Home

After a shaky start to the 2017-18 English Premier League, Gooners will now be breathing a little easier, after Arsenal took their third home-game victory of the season on Monday night. The Gunners hosted West Bromwich Albion in their sixth match of the 2017-18 EPL, and finished 2-0 up and a step closer to the ladder leaders.

It’s a welcome turnaround for Arsene Wenger’s men. After winning the season opener at home against Leicester City 4-3, the team dismayed loyal Gooners with back-to-back away losses, going down 1-0 to Stoke City and an embarrassing 4-0 hiding from Liverpool. Back home, they beat Bournemouth 3-0, but could only manage a goalless draw away against Chelsea last week.

Gunners Move Up the Ladder

Monday’s West Brom victory keeps this year’s home record intact and leaves the Gunners with 10 points in total. Ladder leaders Manchester United are on 16, as are Manchester City, with Chelsea lying third on 13. Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and Watford come next on 11 points, separated only by goal differences.

So Arsenal is currently seventh, which is better than they were doing two weeks ago. As he revealed on Monday night, new signing Alexandre Lacazette is going to be an invaluable asset as the team challenges sides further up the ladder.

The French striker was a close-season signing from Lyon, a club where he debuted at 19 and was Player of the Year in the 2014-15 season. He’s continued his success since he was signed to Arsenal for a club-record 53-million Euros in July.

Lacazette Gets Two; Keeps Home-Game Record

On Monday, Lacazette put away both of Arsenal’s goals to seal the victory: the first from a header 20 minutes into the match, the second from a penalty half-way through the second half. He also scored against Leicester City and Bournemouth, so his goals against West Brom made the Frenchman the first Arsenal footballer to score in his opening three home games in 29 years.

West Brom were unlucky to be denied a penalty after seven minutes, when Jay Rodriguez was brought down by Shkodran Mustafi in the box; probably because Rodriguez got straight up and played on. Desperate Gunners’ defence from Nacho Monreal just before half-time also denied Rodriguez’ shot at an open goal.

Apart from those two shaky moments, though, Arsenal never faltered. The North London side is at home again to Brighton and Hove Albion this Sunday, while West Brom hosts Watford on Saturday.
