10 Start-Ups to Get Help from Tennis Australia

April 13, 2020 by

10 start-ups from seven countries have been chosen to take part in the first-ever TechStars SportsTech Melbourne Accelerator.

The project is a joint initiative between the American seed accelerator Techstars, LaunchVic, Tennis Australia, and Victoria University. It focuses on sports technology firms still in their early stages that aim to disrupt and drive change in events, grassroots-participation, high-performance sport, and media technology.

Almost 200 start-ups from 40+ nations applied to be a part of the programme and 20 of these were then selected to participate in a high-stakes selection process. This procedure was managed by leaders in sport, technology, and venture capital at the 2020 Australian Open Tournament.

The Accelerator distils two years worth of work into just three months and sees industry leaders and mentors working with the final 10 selected organisations on their projects to get them market-ready.

TA Chief Executive Officer Craig Tiley said that creating opportunities to grow Tennis and connect more people to events has been one of his organisation’s priorities for many years now. He explained that the Techstars partnership is the obvious next step in TA’s drive to fuel innovation and general interest in the game for the benefit of those playing it at any level as well as those watching it.

Tiley went on to mention the novel coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic, saying that this crisis should serve as a warning that we need to start doing things differently, and the new pathways we’re forging will present challenges we’ve never faced before.
