Alexander Zverev has upset Novak Djokovic to claim the biggest title of his career so far, earning a 6-4, 6-3 victory during the ATP Finals.
The 21-year-old has become the youngest champion of the event since Djokovic claimed the first of his titles ten years ago, and the first from Germany since 1995. Djokovic, who is currently the top-ranked player in the world, was on course for a tie with Roger Federer’s record of six titles, but wound up instead emulating his loss when Zverev beat Federer in the semi-finals played at the O2 Arena.
Djokovic’s serve had remained steadfast throughout the entire tournament until the final match. Zverev did it once during the first set, and then another three times in the second, taking the win with a memorable backhand.
Both players started the game in the same form that had lead them to earn straight set semi-final victories earlier in the tournaments, with only a few points against the server. Djokovic began to feel the pressure thanks to consecutive forehand errors, giving Zverev the chance to serve out the opening set 5-4. He also received an ovation from the crowd as he stepped up to serve, which seemingly inspired the player.
Zverev remained solid on his servers before he ended with a flourish. After he won, the layer fell to the ground in tears as Djokovic went across the net to embrace the younger player in a show of admirable sportsmanship.
