British Andy Murray has publicly announced his retirement from his professional career, saying that he intends to stop playing after Wimbledon if possible, but added that he may only make it to the end of the Australian Open.
The three-time Grand Slam champion is still in recovery from a hip operation that he underwent last year, and has been unable to return to form due to the pain. In a news conference at Melbourne, the player gave a tear-filled statement to reporters regarding his recovery and eventual retirement from the sport.
Talking to reporters, Murray said that he doesn’t know if he will be able to play through the pain over the next few months, adding that he intends to try and play to the end of Wimbledon but he’s uncertain if he will be able to accomplish that. Despite this, he is adamant that he will be playing at the first round of the Australian Open, where he is set to face Spanish 22nd seeded Roberto Bautists Agut.
Murray, who was previously the world number one, underwent hip surgery on his right hip at the beginning of last year, and has since played a total of 14 matches since returning to the professional spotlight. He ended his season in September last year, and spent some time in rehabilitation, but was still short of the required level when he took on current world number on Novak Djokovic during an open practice in Melbourne as part of the Open preparations.
