ATP Paris Kicks Off In France 
The Paris leg of the ATP Tennis tour kicked off in France on Monday and things are already starting to take definite shape in the way of important firsts. Qualifier Jeremy Chardy beat Gilles Simon for the first time in five matches in a 6-3, 6-0 match that lasted all of 66 minutes. Gilles Simon is no lightweight, having reached the semi-finals of the Rolex Paris Masters in 2012. Jeremy Chardy now advances to come face to face with Roberto Bautista Agut from Spain. Agut is currently seeded 14th.
In camp wildcard France, Nicolas Mahut beat Canadian qualifier Vasek Pospisil 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 in a match that lasted a considerably longer and more gruelling 2 hours and 35 minutes. The victory has ensured that Mahut will now have the opportunity to show his steel against Nitto ATP Finals contender Pablo Carreno Busto of Spain.
Speaking to the press after the match, Mahut said that he was feeling better and stronger than ever and that to be able to win a match at a Masters 1000 was an extremely positive experience and a privilege for him to have. He went on to say that he had had a lot of energy during the match and that he thought that he was serving and moving effectively.
Mahut was supported court-side by his number 1 fan: his son.
The In’s And Out’s
The Americans have had poorer luck of it on Monday, with both Steve Johnson as well as Ryan Harrison having made early exits.
Johnson’s exit was thanks to Dutchman Robin Haase, who had not recorded a single victory at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 since 2013. Haase beat Johnson 6-2, 6-1 in 51 minutes. German Alexander Zverev will be up next for Haase. Zverev is currently seeded 4th and is the winner of two Masters 1000 titles this year only, at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia and the Western and Southern Open.
German Peter Gojowczyk beat Ryan Harrison 7-6, 6-3 on Monday, in 85 minutes, resulting in a second round match against Austria’s Dominic Thiem up next.
Nitto ATP Finals hopefuls Feliciano Lopez and Marc Lopez kept the dream alive by defeating Karen Khachanov and Andrey Rublev 4-6, 6-4, 10-6 in the first round of the doubles. The powerful duo from Spain must win the Paris title if they are to have any hope of returning to The O2, which was where it all started for them a year ago.
