Australia Ready For German Tactics

Australia Ready To Take On Germany

Australia will be ready to weather anything that Germany has up its sleeve in the upcoming Davis Cup.  This according to team leader Lleyton Hewitt. The German team is bound to be a force to be reckoned with and will include world no. 4 Alexander Zverev. The rest of the team will consist of Jan-Lennard Struff, Peter Gojowczyk and Tim Puetz.

Hewitt draws his confidence from the fact that he and the rest of the Australian team have had many opportunities to see especially Gojowczyk and Puetz in action and as such, have a heads up on what their style and strategy might be coming into the Davis Cup.

Hewitt seems most weary of Zverev, saying that the world no. 4 likes to strike the ball hard and play on his own terms and that irrespective of who is chosen to go up against him (Zverev), that person is bound to have a bit of a hard time.

Nick Kyrgious To Be Over-Utilised

Nick Kyrgios is a given for the singles, but Hewitt has yet to make a final decision as to who will be out there supporting him. Jordan Thompson, John Millman and Alex De Minaur have been included in Hewitt’s five-player squad so far and it appears as though the fifth man may end up being Matt Ebden.

Hewitt has indicated that he may even exercise the option of playing Nick Kyrgios in three successive five-set matches in a row against Germany and has said that this possibility (of using Kyrgios for three days in row) should not be ruled out at all. He also acknowledged that the Davis Cup was tough on a player, physically as well as mentally, and has said that careful consideration will go into any decision of this nature.

It will all depend on what happens to the score line on day 1, as well as how important the fourth match in the run will be. That will be the ultimate decider, as Hewitt will no doubt want Kyrgious in top notch shape for the fourth match.

Thompson First Choice For Doubles

As far as Jordan Thompson goes, he will most probably be utilised in the doubles division.  Thompson has struggled in singles matches throughout the entire summer but was in top form in last year’s Davis Cup semi-final doubles division in Belgium.

On the doubles court, Thompson really stands out in everything from serving to returning.
