Here’s Looking At Tennis 2018
Silence and calm currently prevails in the world of professional tennis. A calm that will continue to prevail until the start of the 2018 ATP and WTA seasons. The close of the old and start of the new is almost always accompanied by questions and musings as to what the new year may hold, and 2018 is no exception. In fact, the musings haven’t quite been this intriguing in a long time. We take a look at what the new year may or may not bring, especially with the Australian Open in mind.
Serena Williams: To Play Or Not To Play?
It is said that the only certainty about life is death. Similarly, the only certainty about Serena and the Australian Open is that the World No. 22 holds a free pass to play. Serena is one of 107 players who hold an auto-entry pass as a result of their individual standings on the world ranking list.
The question is therefore not whether Williams qualifies to play in the Australian Open, but rather whether she will choose to play. Despite Australian Open Tournament director Craig Tiley’s positive outlook on the matter of Williams playing, Team Williams has been unusually silent about the matter up until now. Then again, whilst being interviewed in August, Williams did say to a leading media house that she would be chasing down a 24th Grand Slam title and that the Australian Open would be her first choice for this particular feat.
What’s Up With Novak Djokovic?
Novak Djokovic is an all-consuming flame. A flame that has dominated the tennis landscape right up to 2016 when the superstar won his career Grand Slam at the 2016 French Open. The fire began to die down immediately after. So much so that the entire world of tennis sat up straight and took notice. A lot has happened since, including a brand-new support team as well as his taking time off to deal with a number of private issues. The mediocrity finally reached the ultimate anti-climax when Djokovic finally checked out of his 2017 campaign as a result of an injured right elbow.
There really is no way of determining whether the old fire will be back under Djokovic until he re-commences playing in 2018.
Until then, we have no other option but to wait with bated breath and hope for the best.
