Australian Open Possibly Delayed By Weeks

December 2, 2020 by

Victoria state Sports Minister Martin Pakula has announced the strong possibility of a delayed 2021 Australian Open by couple of weeks. Current indications are however that the first Grand Slam tournament of the year is fully expected to go ahead, said Pakula.

A delay by a week or two is much more likely an eventuality that what would be a longer delay or even an outright cancellation, said the minister. The negotiations between various levels of government and Australian tennis officials are however complex, stressed Pakula. He said that this was something the professional tennis world needed to be aware of.

With Victoria and the city of Melbourne now officially free of infections, officials are feeling positive about the likelihood of an Australian Open in 2021, said tournament director and Tennis Australia CEO Craig Tiley late last week. The final dates set aside for the tournament are expected to be announced within the coming couple of weeks.

Pakula wasn’t willing to wager any guesses regarding anticipated quarantine requirements or even what a possible Australian Open bubble could be expected to look like. Whether or not a bubble will even form part of the plan of action is not yet certain and still part of ongoing conversations and negotiations, said the minister. Health and safety requirements and arrangements will ultimately be those in agreement with the directives issued by public health officials, Pakula concluded.

Tennis Australia a little over a week ago confirmed that all of the usual lead-up tournaments traditionally held in Brisbane, Perth, Sydney, and Adelaide, will be relocate to Victoria in an attempt to avoid conflicting domestic border restrictions and regulations.
