Zhuhai WTA Elite Trophy 
Ashleigh Barty secured her place in the Zhuhai WTA semi-finals on Thursday when she beat Angelique Kerber 6-3, 6-4. Playing in the Rose group, Barty currently stands at 2-0 overall, and became the first player to advance to the final four. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova finished second at 1-1 and Kerber third with 0-2.
The Australian didn’t only win the match but did so in a stellar fashion, having struck a staggering 35 winners compared to only 12 unforced errors. All of this lasted a mere 1 hour and 11 minutes.
Barty said after the match that it had been a tough group to play due to the fact that she had not beaten either Kerber or Pavlyuchenkova before and that it was a sweet form of revenge to finally be able to do so. She went on to say that she believed that the victories were as a result of her having primarily served well and having followed through afterwards every time.
WTA EA Hua Hin Championship 2017
Thailand’s No. 1 players Luksika Kumkhum and Wishaya Trongcharoenchaikul will be carrying the local flame of hope at the WTA EA Hua Hin Championship 2017 at the True Arena Hua Hin. The championship runs from 6 – 12 November.
They will be joined by Peangtarn Plipuech, Chompoothip Jandakate and Yanin Wisitwarapron – the three wildcard holders into the event.
The four top seeds competing will be world no. 44, Wang Qiang (China), no. 84 Evgeniya Rodina (Russia), no. 92 Duan Ying-ying (China) and no. 95 Hsieh Su-wei of Taiwa. Vera Zvonareva, 2010 Russian Wimbledon finalist, will also be competing this year.
Zvonareva has made several comeback attempts after having reached her career high seeded no. 2 back in 2010. She had said on several occasions that Thailand holds a special appeal for her as she won 2 of her 6 WTA titles in Pattaya (2009 – 2010).
In 2016 the WTA EA Hua Hin Championship was postponed to take place early in 2017 when King Bhumibol Adulyadej suddenly passed away aged 88, after having been charged to the throne from the youthful age of 18.
The ATP challenger, which makes up the third challenger series in Thailand, offers the highest prize money for tennis in Thailand. Local male players Wishaya, Pruchya Isarow and Jirat Navasirisomboom have all been afforded wild entries as their qualifiers were not good enough for an earned entry.
Australia’s Matthew Ebden, Canada’s Peter Polanski and Daniel Altmaier from Germany have all qualified for the men’s event, which is scheduled to kick off on November 18th.
