German tennis stalwart Boris Becker has come to the defence of former pupil and world No. 1 Novak Djokovic, calling on Australian Open event organisers to rethink whether the tough restrictions imposed on participants in this year’s event are actually “reasonable”.
Djokovic recently came under fire for a letter directed at tournament boss Craig Tiley. The letter, the contents of which were somehow leaked to an outside Twitter user, included some rather bold – some would even say, demanding – suggestions in terms of players and pre-event training arrangements.
According to Becker, the points raised by Djokovic were all reasonable, valid, and totally legitimate. Becker also told a leading sports broadcaster that whatever Djokovic did, none of it seemed acceptable in the eyes of the tennis world right now. Becker then went on to say that the Serbian was currently being made the victim of those Australians eager to “cut down the tall poppy” because of all the tennis star had achieved in his career as a world-class player.
Djokovic’s letter of appeal was sent from a place of his having wanted to represent and stand up for his fellow players, said the former Germany champion, an act that ultimately resulted in criticism, even by Australia’s Prime Minister. That players should come to the country, and especially to Melbourne, said Becker, was good for the local economy as well as for morale in general. This meant players deserved to be treated with respect, and certainly more fairly than what has been the case with Djokovic.
