Although Novak Djokovic has escaped being penalised for his fracas with Chair Umpire Damien Dumosois in the Australian Open Final, Roger Federer has not been quite so lucky!
Djokovic was livid when he received two Time Infringements from Dumosois, with a code violation included on the second. In his rage, Djokovic touched the Umpire’s foot at the changeover, criticising him by congratulating him sarcastically on a job well done, especially in the second call. He snarled that Dumosois had found his 15 minutes of fame and applauded his efforts, ironically of course.
It didn’t appear to bother Dumusois particularly, however, and Tennis Australia has since confirmed that the World No. 1 player will not be fined as a result of his bad behaviour.
To his credit, however, Djokovic was quick to apologise when the game had come to an end. He said he was unhappy about touching the Umpire and said he regretted offending him and anyone else by his actions. He explained that he had lost his head in the heat of battle.
Not everyone was as fortunate as Djokovic, though, with a total of AU$86 083.95 worth of fines being handed out by officials. Federer was fined AU$3 000 for swearing, and Alexander Zverev, Alize Cornet, Benoit Paire, Fabio Fognini, and Simona Halep all had to get their chequebooks out too. Nick Kyrgios joined this group when he asked the umpire if he was stupid when the player was penalised when he refused to hand a bloody towel to one of the Ball Kids.
