Following a furious outcry in response to sexist comments made by Eddie Jones about Emma Raducanu, the England rugby coach has reportedly now said his words had been repeated completely out of context.
Jones announced on Thursday that he had sent a letter to the US Open star in order to explain the real intention behind his statement regarding Raducanu’s poor recent performances being the result of distractions such as fashion show appearances on the red carpet.
While Jones never mentioned Raducanu by name, he referred to her merely as “the young girl” who won the US Open. This, more than anything else, led many to believe that Jones’ comments had been made from a place of sexism.
Jones this week told a prominent British broadcaster that sexism had not played a role in how he had formulated his comments. Instead, he said his message had been meant as a sincere warning against the many distractions so often to blame for young athletes and players being led astray.
Jones said he wished to stand by his point and that he could not be blamed for the message having been taken out of context. He added that his intentions had been nothing but good and that he wouldn’t be issuing further comments on the matter.
But despite Jones’ explanation, Raducanu will reportedly not take the Rugby Football Union up on its open invitation for her to attend a match at Twickenham this season.
