Federer Wins 20th Grand Slam Title

A hot topic of contention at this year’s Australian Open, the weather was at it yet again during the women’s as well as the men’s finals on Saturday and Sunday past. However, no amount of heat or discomfort proved enough to keep Roger Federer from achieving a 6th Australian Open title win and 20th Grand Slam victory.

Federer is now only the fourth player to have won 20 or more Grand Slam titles. The others in this very elite category are Serena Williams, Steffi Graf and Margaret Court.

The Swiss beat Marin Cilic 6-2, 6-7, 6-3,3-6, 6-1 on Sunday, describing the victory as being a dream come true and a continuation of a fairy tale.

The Weather At It Again

Cilic was blatantly dissatisfied about the fact that the roof of the arena was closed by the match organisers, despite the final having been a night match and temperatures having been nowhere near the extreme heat policy cut-off of 40 degrees Celsius.

Organisers have said that the extreme humidity was behind the decision to close the roof, despite the fact that it was only 37 degrees outside. Cilic has said that the decision that the match would be played under-roof had caught him completely off guard as he had played all of his matches in extreme temperatures and had prepared for yet another 38 degrees and above match. Having then suddenly to adjust to playing indoors had been a mental challenge for him.

Cilic said that the closed roof had made it much cooler than expected and that it was hard to play a final in those kinds of unexpected conditions.

Cash: Federer Benefited From Indoor Conditions

Despite the obvious expectation leading up to the match that Federer would most probably walk away with yet another Grand Slam title under his belt, former Wimbledon star Pat Cash has said that the indoor conditions had most definitely counted in Federer’s favour.

Cash put it down to Federer’s playing style of hitting the ball very hard and swinging at it early. Its what makes Federer one of the best players indoors.

According to Federer, whether the roof had been open or closed made no difference to him. He said that he had prepared for both eventualities.

The news that the roof would be closed for the final match was only handed down to the players 30 minutes before the match commenced.
