It was a question on everyone’s minds before the draw for the Australian Open Tennis tournament was revealed. What was the likelihood that American players Coco Gauff and Venus Williams would once more face off against each other in the Grand Slam’s first round? Gauff said she was as shocked as anyone else when it turns out they would!
The 15-year old began her first appearance at Melbourne Park’s main draw against the 39-year old legend in an exact replay of what went down at Wimbledon roughly six months ago. And, just like it happened at the All England Club, the field’s youngest women beat the oldest one. Gauff was gracious in her victory, saying that she’d had a very tough time of it thanks to how well Williams was playing and her own nervousness about the match-up.
It’s safe to say that the most anticipated Day 1 match at the first Major Tennis tournament of the year didn’t disappoint. The first set was particularly intriguing, with Gauff pulling ahead over and over again only to have Williams rebuff her. Gauff’s fourth set point was the beginning of the end, however. She grabbed a 3 – 0 lead and never lost that edge. And, just like she did last time, Gauff won in straight sets, with a final tally of 7 – 6 (7 – 5) 6 – 3.
This young player demonstrated a range of excellent qualities on the court, including big, brave serves, an ability to track her opponents’ shots down, and a level of diligence rarely seen.
