January’s ATP Cup Remains On Course

August 14, 2020 by

Not only is the next edition of the ATP Cup fully on course to continue as scheduled, but Tennis Australia is also planning several additional events to be played around it. This according to Tennis Australia CEO Craig Tiley. The extra events will reportedly be hosted so as to create additional events focused on helping players prepare for the 2021 Australian Open.

The $15 million ATP Cup made its debut in January this year, and is a joint venture launched by Tennis Australia in association with the men’s tour. The debut-event exceeded all expectations and will, if all goes according to plan, in 2021 be played in three cities, i.e. Brisbane, Perth, and Sydney.

Tiley however made no attempts to sugar-coat the logistical challenges of hosting a three-city major tennis event whilst in the throes of a time notorious for unpredictability and last-minute cancellations of multi-million-dollar tournaments. A great deal of work remains doing, said Tiley, along with all the time ensuring the safety and well-being of all players set to participate.

Part of the preparation work includes the implementation of 5 bio-security bubble-hubs in the three mentioned host cities. These bubbles will according to the chief executive have to be up, running, and fully functional by the beginning of December.

But Tiley says he is also particularly careful not to step on any toes. Since both the Auckland Classic and the Qatar Open have traditionally become popular preparation-stops leading up to the Australian Open, the event’s organisers have much more to consider than international travel logistics.

And as for the players themselves, whilst organisers will be doing everything they can so as to create a safe and protected environment, no one will be forced to participate against their will.
