Konta, Norrie, and Nadal Win At Mexican Open

March 1, 2019 by

British Johanna Konta and Cameron Norrie won at the Mexican Open and have advanced to the second round. 23 year old Norrie defeated Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka 6-2 2-6 6-2, whole 27 year old Konta bested German Laura Siegemund 6-3 6-2 while the pair played in Acapulco. Norrie, who is currently world number 64 and British number two, beat Nishioka in two hours and 18 minutes.

Spanish Rafael Nadal also beat his German opponent, Mischa Zverev 6-3 6-2 during his first match after losing at the Australian Open final earlier this year. Talking about the victory, Nadal said that he is happy to have won, and that it’s never easy to play against Mischa, especially after not competing professionally for a while. Nadal will be taking on Australian Nick Kyrgios in his next game.

Nadal has managed to reach the finals at the Mexico Open three times in the past. He continued by saying that the tournament is difficult, and that there are a lot of great players, so these kind of matches can happen even at the early stages, adding that Nick is one of the most talented players on the tour, and it was a big challenge for the Spanish player.

Zverev’s brother Alexander, who is second seeded, lost just one point on serve in his game against Alexei Popyrin, where he won 6-3 6-3.  Third seeded John Isner served a total of 18 aces in a 6-3 4-6 6-3 win against French Adrian Mannarino.
