Kyrgios Says Morals Call Out Poor Behavior

January 27, 2021 by

Nick KyrgiosAustralian tennis star Nick Kyrgios says he isn’t planning on backing down any time soon as far as calling out poor behaviour from international tennis players is concerned. Kyrgios, after last week labelling world No. 1 Novak Djokovic a “tool” for having written Australian Open tournament organisers about the possibility of easing accommodation and training restrictions, explained that his calling out of bad behaviour was the result of his own personal morals, and not for any sort of attention from the media.

Djokovic, the holder of eight Australian Open titles, was one of several players who tested positive after participating in last year’s Adria Tour, which resulted in the Australian and current world No. 47 referring to the former ATP Player Council president as a “bonehead”. Kyrgios explained his reaction as having been driven by the poor example set by Djokovic, who, owing to his position in the international tennis world, was supposed to have set a very different example than what he had done since the outbreak of the global health crisis.

Kyrgios also said that although Djokovic is human and as such will make mistakes, he can often be seen steering off the beaten track and needs to be held accountable for his decisions and actions. The Australian added that since it seemed as if nobody else was going to hold the world No. 1 accountable, he had decided to take the responsibility upon himself. He was trying to play his part, said Kyrgios, and planned to continue doing exactly that.
