Lleyton Hewitt Plots Return To Pro-Tennis At Australian Open
Former World No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt has said that it may be time to make a come-back out of retirement. Australia’s formidable Davis Cup captain retired from professional tennis after winning a home Grand Slam in 2016, deciding to conclude his professional career on the ultimate note. He has since returned to play twice – once at Wimbledon and once for the coveted Davis Cup.
Now Hewitt has said that he is looking to make a proper and more permanent come-back and plans to do so at next month’s Australian Open at Melbourne Park. Hewitt plans to return to doubles tennis with his compatriot Sam Groth. Hewitt and Groth fared well at the 2016 Australian Open, reaching Round 16 in the men’s doubles division.
Speaking to the press, Hewitt said that the idea was to have fun at the Australian Open, and that that, after all, was what the Open was all about. Hewitt said that he and Groth had been hitting balls and practising daily and that the idea wasn’t merely to compete or make up doubles numbers, but to give it a serious go.
Sam Groth plans to retire after this year’s Australian Open and will most probably compete in the men’s singles division as well in the event that he does qualify or receive a wildcard entry. Groth says that he and Hewitt’s preparations for this year’s Open began about month ago, and that they were now going at it full swing.
Groth also said that it was important for him to finish strong before retiring from professional tennis and that for him, Hewitt was that guy to be doing it with, as he and Hewitt had played big games together, especially in the Davis Cup.
Nick Kyrgios Ready According To Hewitt
It would seem that Hewitt hasn’t only been giving thought to his own career, but also to that of fellow Aussie Nick Kyrgios. In Hewitt’s opinion, Kyrgios will be fit enough to play in next month’s Australian Open. Kyrgios has been battling a hip injury for most of the year, cutting his season short in October.
Hewitt has said that Kyrgios will be fit and firing on full blast at next month’s Australian Open.
Nick Kyrgios is currently ranked World No. 21, 8 places down from an all time career high of No. 13 at the end of 2016.
