Medvedev Adds His Voice To AO Uncertainty

November 3, 2021 by

Although US Open winner Daniil Medvedev says he’s looking forward to playing in January’s Australian Open tournament, he says he isn’t able to confirm whether or not he’ll be playing in the first Grand Slam of the year. It seems it all depends on whether unvaccinated players will be permitted to travel to Melbourne.

After Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews announced last week that no unvaccinated professional athlete would be allowed to compete in the country – including tennis players – Medvedev said in an interview he could not confirm is participation at this stage. Not unlike world No. 1 Novak Djokovic, he too prefers to keep his medical records and status private.

Speaking ahead of the Paris Masters, the world No. 2 said any information had the potential to create an edge in favour of a player’s opponent. He said as such, his medical information would not be divulged, and for good reason.

As for Djokovic, his stance on the matter has remain unchanged. He said recently he would wait for further quarantine rules clarity from Tennis Australia before making a final decision on whether he’ll play for a chance to secure his record 21st Grand Slam trophy.

Djokovic also added that he would not be discussing the matter any longer, and at least not until he has personal clarity for himself.

But Medvedev had something additional on his mind. Referring to tennis players being the only professional athletes to play 11 months a year, Medvedev called on tennis officials to shorten the length of the season. He said the current format left much to be desired in terms of sufficient preparation time between tournaments.
