Mumbai Hosts First Open

This year sees Mumbai hosting the very first major tennis championship, which commences on November 18th.  Players from India have welcomed the major league event, having previously struggled to progress through the ranks as a result of a complete lack of exposure.

The first WTA 125K Series event has attracted a number of star international players, including Russian former world no. 2 Vera Zvonareva.  Players from a total of 19 nations will be competing at the event which will be hosted by the Cricket Club of India.

Another former world no. 2, Belgium’s Yannina Wickmayer, will also be among the list of competitors as well as current world no. 78 Aryna Sabalenka.  Despite the star-studded list of competitors, all eyes will be on the four wild-card entries from India: India no. 1 Ankita Raina, Karman Kaur Thandi, Zeel Desai and Rujuta Bhosale. You can bet on who you think will win at Crownbet, a leading Australian online sportsbook.

Ankita Raina

Ankita Raina is the current Indian no. 1 singles player and has won five singles and seven doubles titles on the ITF schedule of events.  Raina made her first professional appearance in 2010, also in Mumbai and has continued with varyinng success on the ITF scene since then.

Raina won her first professional singles title in 2012 in New Delhi as well as going on to win three more professional titles in doubles.

Karman Kaur Thandi

19 year old Karman Kaur Thandi achieved a WTA singles career high ranking of 32, which she attained on 8 January 2016.   Thandi has also won three ITF doubles titles and obtained a doubles career high on 21 November 2016, when she was officially ranked 566th.

Karman most recently finished as runner up in the ITF Pune Open, second only to Romania’s Jaqueline Adina Cristian.  Karman has made name for being an Indian player with a stellar serve and it was evident in the match against Cristian.  The game lasted 23 minutes, with Karman having saved seven breakpoints and a conversion on the eighth.

Karman’s shot-making was a source of great excitement among the spectators, and despite her coming in at second-best, was the match favourite among the fans by far.  The decider ended up being two  loose serving games on the part of Karman.

The fourth and final game ultimately ended in  her being at the receiving end of a number of unforced errors, which ended in a weak forehand into the net.

All in all, it wasn’t difficult to see why Karman is a force to contend with.
