Sharapova Knocked Out Of 2017 Tennis US Open

Potential 2017 Tennis US Open title contender Maria Sharapova has been knocked out of the Tennis US Open.  This after falling 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 on Sunday during Round 4 to Latvia’s Anastasija Sevastova – currently seeded 16th.  The victory by Sevastova has booked a quarterfinal stand-off for the Latvian, against Sloane Stephens from the United States.

Sharapova – who had only recently returned to professional tennis after a 15 month ban as a result of doping allegations – won the first set but soon fell behind after having developed a blister on her right hand.  Sevastova said of the first set that it had been very close and could have gone either way, as Sharapova had put on a valiant fight, chasing down every last ball.

27 year old Anastasija had also made the quarterfinal rounds in 2016.

Americans Putting On A Show For Home Crowd

It wasn’t only Sloane Stephens who had put on a show for her home crowd in New York City, but also 7 time Grand Slam title winner Venus Williams.  The elder of the two Williams sisters is – at 37 – the oldest contender for this year’s US Open title.

Williams will be having a go at her third Grand Slam final for the 2017 season, after having lost to younger sister Serena Williams at the Australian Open and to Garbine Muguruza at Wimbledon 2017.

Williams may very well be coming up against Garbine Muguruza next at the 2017 Tennis US Open.

Federer And Nadal Promise Not To Disappoint

Meanwhile in the men’s camp, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are staying on track for a 2017 Tennis US Open semi-final clash.

The 3rd Round at Flushing Meadows NY saw Federer beating 31st seeded Feliciano Lopez in a quite straightforward 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 triumph lasting all of 106 minutes on Sunday evening.  Revealing in itself is the fact that Federer secured the victory over Lopez amidst a remarkable low of sixteen unforced errors.

Federer said of the match against Lopez, that it had been a very clean match and that he (Federer) could not be happier at the outcome.

33rd Seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber is next up against Federer.  Kohlschreiber had beat John Millman 7-5, 6-2, 6-4.  Federer seemingly does not have too much to be concerned about – his head to head record against Kohlschreiber being 11-0.

Rafael Nadal on Saturday defeated Argentinian player Leonardo Mayer 6-7, 6-3, 6-1, 6-4 – thereby securing his own spot in Round 4.

Nadal and long-time rival Federer had never met at the Tennis US Open.
