Nadal’s First Lost Set In Three Years

June 8, 2018 by

For the first time in three years, Rafael Nadal has lost his first set while playing at the French Open. The surprise loss came at the hands of Argentinian opponent Diego Schwartzman, who claimed a 6-4 lead after their quarterfinal game.

Before facing Schwartzman, 10-time champion Nadal had been victorious in a total of 37 consecutive sets played at Roland Garros since 2015, where he was defeated by Novak Djokovic. Nadal’s latest game saw him drop three serves, ultimately forcing him to lose sets against Schwartzman.

The 11th seed, Schwartzman has not seen nearly as many wins as his latest opponent, and had previously been two steps behind from his games against Kevin Anderson. After the game was initially delayed due to a spectator falling ill in the stands, the Argentinian fought hard to earn his victory over Nadal. Schwartzman managed his third set point with a forehand up the line, gaining the lead after a long match.

Nadal, who is currently the world number 1, has only ever lost two French Open matches in his career, with his game against Schwartzman being the second. Nadal managed four points in the opening game but went on to make 14 unforced errors. A second set had been underway, but was suspended due to the weather turning and rain clearing out the court and the stands. Although Nadal has lost his latest match, his rank remains unchanged, and will continue to see him play in the Open.
