England tennis star Emma Raducanu says she remains hopeful that she’ll be able to procure the services of a new coach in time for next year’s Australian Open. The young star has been without a coach since parting ways with US Open coach Andrew Richardson.
As for Transylvania Open, when prodded about who will be coaching her in her second tournament since the US Open, Raducanu responded with a short and courteous, “myself”.
Instead of feeling downtrodden about not having a coach right now, Raducanu said she’s of the firm belief that there’s much to be taken away from this experience also. Being not exclusively dependent on somebody else is something the English star said she’s now learning to do with greater zeal.
Raducanu will play her first-round match in Cluj-Napoca on Tuesday when she takes on Polona Hercog of Slovenia. She seemed happy to be playing in Romania, and thanks to her roots, is able to speak quite a bit of the language. She enjoys a good relationship with several Romanian players, including Ruse and Ana Bogdan, and Monica Niculescu.
Raducanu’s grandmother and father hail from Romania. She used to regularly visit the country as a young child.
Of her new friends, Raducanu said the connection came when they recognised her surname. She said she enjoyed chatting and having dinner with her Romanian counterparts and described them to be a friendly bunch. She also expressed gratitude at how they’d welcomed her and tried to help her find her feet.
