Rafael Nadal Wins Davis Cup Final

November 27, 2019 by

Rafael Nadal claimed an emotionally charged victory for his home country as he beat Canada for the final match of the Davis Cup. Nadal beat the Canadian, Denis Shapovalov, in front of a roaring crowd as the two battled for the win in Madrid. Nadal walked off of the court with a 6-3 7-6 (9-7) win, sealing the title for Spain, while Roberto Bautista Agut returned to the team three days after his father passed away to push the hosts up 1-0.

Bautista Agut was left sobbing after he beat 10 year old Felix Auger-Aliassime 7-6 (7-3) 6-3 for the opener. Nadal’s latest win has given Spain a 2-0 lead and a sixth Davis Cup trophy. The world number one has claimed all eight of his rubbers, allowing his team to push to their first title since 2011, and to give local fans a reason to celebrate.

Talking about their victory, Spanish captain Sergi Bruguera stated that the moment was difficult to describe, and that they all were experiencing different emotions. He added that it had been incredible that Roberto was at his father’s funeral just the day before, and now he has returned and has given his everything for his team, while adding that Nadal was out of this world.

The newest format saw 19 years playing in an event at the Spanish capital, using a round-robin style of group stage knockout system compared to the old system, where teams played away.
