Rafael Nadal Wins Italian Open

May 22, 2019 by

Rafael Nadal has claimed his first title for the season after he bested world number one Novak Djokovic 6– 4-6 6-1 to win the Italian Open final played in Rome. The Spanish played shot through the opener in 39 minutes, marking it as the first 6-0 between the two in their previous 141 sets.

Djokovic fought back hard, but it didn’t prove to be enough as Nadal sealed his ninth title for the Italian Open in 2 hours and 25 minutes. It was also his 81st tournament title win, and he is now 34-33 ahead of Djokovic in terms of Masters 1000 Series title wins. The victory is a boost for Nadal before he heads off to the French Open, who was beaten by Djokovic in the final of the Australian Open earlier in the year, and who had last in the semi final stages of the last four tournaments that he competed in.

Since 2005, Nadal has seen victory in at least once of the nine Masters 1000 events in every season except for 2015. Djokovic had saved two match points for his quarter final victory against Juan marin del Petro, and then another three set match later on the same day against Diego Schwartzman.

Nadal and Djokovic were meeting for the 54th time so far in their careers, saw the Serb initially overwhelming Nadal with his trademark forehand. Despite this, the 31 year old displayed his famous resolve and pushed on through to the win.
