Nadal has been off to a good start at the Madrid Open, and saw off Gael Monfils in his first game thanks to a series of straight sets – all within an hour and 13 minutes.
His victory saw him finish with 48 sets in a row, which means that he is now very close to breaking the world record. The record currently belongs to John McEnroe, who achieved the most consecutive sets in a row at 49 on carpet.
Nadal might just beat that record, however, if he manages to win in his upcoming game against Diego Schwartzmen. If that’s the case, he might reach 50, and be the new owner of the record.
When asked by reporters about his progress toward the monumental achievement, Nadal didn’t seem to think it was that important.
“I’m lost. Each time is a less important stat,” he said. “Look, if it was important, I had no idea about that stat. I am not saying that it’s not important, but what is important is I made it to the third round of this tournament. I’ve played a really good match. I beat an opponent who is difficult. The feelings are very good.”
“I don’t want to think about these things,” he explained further. “It happens later, okay, happened, good. But being honest, I don’t know if these kind of records are very important. I don’t say I don’t care because it’s better to have these kind of things than don’t have it. But I am in a tennis tournament, and I think about that, nothing else.”
