Serena Williams Makes Comeback At French Open

June 4, 2018 by

After a long absence from the professional tennis scene, Serena Williams finally sees her first major victory at the French Open against Australia’s Ashleigh Barty with 3-6, 6-3, and 6-5. This pushes Williams to the French Open third round.

It’s the first time the three-time champion and previous world number one player has seen her first Slam since winning the Australian Open in 2017, after which she took a leave of absence for her pregnancy.

Williams is currently aimed on a 24th Grand Slam, and will next be playing against Germany’s Julia Goerges for the last 16.

If she manages to get into the third round, she will most likely be facing Maria Sharapova, an old rival, where they will battle it out for a spot in the semi finals.

Williams told reporters that she’s happy at the progress she has made, and that after she lost her first set, she aimed to try harder for her upcoming games. Despite her enthusiasm, her match against Barty proved to be a difficult one, where the Australian saw success at the start. By the second set, it looked as though Barty would walk away the winner, but Williams managed victory in four straight games, and a fifth ace saw her claim the set.

A break during the third game of the decider match was the turning point for Williams, and she claimed the final win on a second match point with a running forehand.
