Simona Halep has missed the opportunity to take up the mantle of world number one after she lost 7-5 6-1 to Karolina Pliskova during the semi finals of the Miami Open. The 27-year-old Czech Pliskova won a total of nine straight games, and 10 of the last 11, fighting back from the 5-3 behind she acquired during the first set.
Halep would have been able to advance to the top rankings if she had progressed to the final set, but for now Naomi Osaka will remain as world number one. Fifth seeded Pliskova is set tot take on Australian Ashleigh Barty for the final after she takes on Anett Kontaveit.
22 year old Barty, who reached the biggest final of her career so far by beating the Estonian 6-3, 6-3, broke her opponent’s serve on five different occasions as they played on a day that was interrupted sporadically by rain.
Talking about her game, Barty stated that it had been a very long day, and that they were forced to wait around but it gave them the opportunity to have some coffee and watch golf. She continued by saying that when she entered the courts, she was ready for business, and while it didn’t start well, she was able to reset and do what she had to do.
Pliskova’s latest victory over Halep was stopped twice due to the heavy rains, which included when the Czech player was leading 7-5 5-0.
