Australian professional Tennis player Nick Kyrgios’ idea of starting fundraising efforts to give aid to victims of the horrific bushfires the continent is dealing with has resulted in an exhibition match being announced that will feature some of the best players in the world.
Kyrgios started what has become a veritable flood of donations to the campaign from athletes all over Australia and beyond, including from the likes of LaMelo Ball, point guard for the Illawarra Hawks of the National Basketball League. Ball has pledged a month’s salary to the cause.
Tennis Australia responded to Kyrgios’ idea of a charity game by announcing the Rally for Relief, an exhibition game set to unfold on Wednesday the 15th of January at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne. Proceeds from a Jessica Mauboy concert on the 19th will also be donated to the Red Cross and AU$1 million has been granted by TA to rebuild Tennis facilities for stricken communities.
Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic are currently in the country, in preparation for the Grand Slam tournament, and Djokovic has pledged to donate AU$200 for each ace he serves across the entire season. Alex de Minaur, John Millman, and Samantha Stosur are just a few of the other names that have vowed to do the same, and even the Association of Tennis Professionals has stepped up. The governing body has pledged AU$100 to the Red Cross for each ace served over the next ten days.
